History:

The Brewster F2A Buffalo was an American fighter aircraft developed in the late 1930s by the Brewster Aeronautical Corporation.

The F2A Buffalo was the first monocoque fighter aircraft with an all-metal construction to enter service with the U.S. Navy. It was powered by the Wright R-1820 Cyclone radial engine and was equipped with four machine guns.

One of the most successful deployments of the F2A Buffalo was with the Finnish Air Force during the Winter War and the subsequent Continuation War against the Soviet Union. The Finns received 44 F2A-1 aircraft, which they designated as B-239. Despite being demilitarized and requiring modifications for combat purposes, Finnish pilots achieved significant success with them. Thanks to their tactics and experience, Finnish pilots were able to effectively utilize the Buffalo’s strengths, such as its good stability and durability, achieving numerous aerial victories against a numerically superior and better-equipped enemy.

Among the most notable Finnish pilots who flew the Buffalo were Hans Wind, Eino Ilmari Juutilainen, and Jorma Sarvanto. Hans Wind achieved 39 aerial victories in the Buffalo, making him one of Finland’s top aces. Eino Ilmari Juutilainen, Finland’s most successful ace, also celebrated significant successes with the Buffalo, achieving a total of 94 confirmed kills. Jorma Sarvanto gained fame by shooting down six Soviet bombers during a single mission.

Overall, the Brewster F2A Buffalo was not the most successful fighter aircraft of its time, but in the hands of Finnish pilots, it proved to be an effective weapon that contributed to the defense of the country against a much stronger adversary.
